Organizing Committee: Frédéric Worms,
Jean-Michel Salanskis
Workshop under the auspices of the
Centre International d’étude de la philosophie française contemporaine, 45 rue d’Ulm, 75005 – Paris
Supported by the Association pour la Célébration du Centenaire d'Emmanuel Levinas (ACCEL), Paris
Sponsored by the City of Paris (Ville de Paris)
The purpose of this workshop – which features more than 20 speakers – is to assess both the singularity of Emmanuel Levinas with French 20th century philosophy and solid and profound relationship that links him to its different phases, characterized by issues, trends and authors. For this reason, the presentations are grouped chronologically into four periods:
-
Levinas’ arrival in France and his first texts. What Levinas drew from the previous generation (Bergson, Brunschvicg, etc.). The decisive impact of phenomenology, Levinas in Strasbourg, the rise of Nazism, the first political texts in the 1930s.
-
World War II. The first books (Le temps et l’autre, De l’existence à l’existant), ties with Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Jean Wahl, Jankélévitch.
-
The 1960s and the mature works, strictly contemporary in its difference from a configuration that includes Derrida, Lyotard, Deleuze, Foucault and Ricoeur.
-
Levinas today, both from the perspective of the developing commentary on all facets of his works, and future directions.
